With such limited knowledge I simply have bought the more affordable full powered loads for my KSG that I've had for a while now. Now I have a better understanding about the suitability of ammo for the HD role thanks to you. If you have some buckshot tips and tricks, leave your buckshot wisdom below in the comments. Usually two or three pellets were wider than the center spread, but none went into the white. This is a reasonable load for home defense, but it’s not our favorite. There are advantages in a 1254-fps load in penetration and energy. In the Benelli, the loading sent all eight balls into a 4.5-by-2.8-inch group, statistically little different from the pumpgun. If you are looking for a full-power loading, this one works well. Some of the raters noticed the difference in recoil between this and the reduced recoil load in the Benelli, and some did not.
Assessing Pistol Recoil Energy
It is also a good option if you are concerned about over-penetration, as the smaller pellets are less likely to penetrate walls and injure innocent people. As with anything use the right tool for the right job, right? If you don’t have to worry about 00 balls going through drywall and hitting a family member, by all means use 00. However, if you do have to worry about this use a different load inside your house. I personally use 12ga high brass #6’s, but again this would be at very, very close range as this is used inside my home. I don’t have a mansion, so we aren’t talking 100yd shots here.
Therefore, I prefer the Hornady Critical Defense load or Remington’s full-power TAC 8 shells in my Remington Model 1100 deer gun. Again, it’s a matter of finding a load that is both reliable in your gun and throws tight patterns to reduce the risk of collateral damage. The PDX load covers several bases, with a 1-ounce slug and three 00 buckshot pellets.

I am surprised that any member of the NTOA or ILEETA would purport that birdshot is a better option than buckshot for home defense. Gun Tests has been independently reviewing firearms since 1989. Unless otherwise noted, these reviews carry the guns’ prices at the time of the original review.

The RWS Copper Matrix frangible buckshot load functioned most of the time but sometimes not. It is an interesting choice for training and practice. The sole malfunction in the Benelli was the RWS Copper Matrix. The load didn’t provide enough power to work the action completely. We wanted to test a frangible, so we picked the RWS load using eight frangible balls. The first thing to remember is that while there are eight balls, the weight of the charge is very light at less than 290 grains.
What Are The Different Buckshot Sizes?
There were caliber #1 buckshot balls in this 2.75-inch shell. The shell didn’t kick worse than 00 buck, but the pattern was larger than we like at 13.5 by 13 inches. One of the raters liked this load as a compromise between the smallest and largest shot.

But if you tend to make it withstand heavy pounding, it might not last that long. You should know the answers to some commonly asked questions about this product. To keep from hassle coming your way, you need to choose a product with at least one year warranty. Depending on the manufacturer, the product warranty can increase, and an extended warranty will keep unwanted hassle at bay.
AMMO SPOTLIGHT
The Benelli gained 5 fps over the pumpgun’s velocity and put all eight pellets into 1.7 by 1.6 inches. Basically, patterns were identical in each shotgun. This was an affordable load at the time of purchase, but was nonetheless high quality and feed reliable in the Benelli and a first-class performer. One rater noted that 10 yards would be a long shot for his home.

I fired one shot with each load at the head of a full-sized silhouette target 7 yards away, and one at the center of the target’s chest at 15 yards. Each load kept all of its pellets in the head at 7 yards, although the Super-X hunting load clearly shot the largest pattern. At 15 yards, the area of the pattern of the Federal load remained essentially the same as it was at 7 yards. The other loads shot patterns that were wider at 15 yards than at 7 yards, and the Remington #4 load increased the most in area.
Yes, number four buckshot is a good choice for home defense. It is a versatile round that can be used in both shotguns and rifles. The pellets are small enough to cause serious damage, but not so large that they will over-penetrate and injure innocent bystanders.
The one side wanted a tight pattern to produce the most effect possible and produce good wound potential at 20 yards or more. With some loads, 30 yards might not be out of the question, if 50% of the pellets struck the target. What if the threat is behind cover and partially exposed? If you fire at a threat behind a tree, as an example, with only a hand and an eye exposed and firing at you, the larger pattern has a greater chance of snagging the opponent with a few pellets.
